Fainting
Fainting, also called syncope (pronounced SIN-ko-pee), is a sudden, brief loss of consciousness that usually results in a fall. When you faint, you'll feel weak and unsteady before passing out for a short period of time, usually only a few seconds.
The brain relies on oxygen carried in the blood to function properly. Fainting can occur when the blood flow to the brain is reduced. Your body usually corrects reduced blood flow to the brain quickly, but it can make you feel odd, sweaty, and dizzy. If it lasts long enough, you may faint.
The most common reason for fainting stems from crossed wires between the brain and the vagus nerve, the part of the nervous system that regulates blood pressure and heart rate. In response to some trigger, the blood vessels in your legs relax and the heart rate slows, making it difficult for blood to return to the heart. Blood pressure drops, and so do you.
Many different conditions can cause fainting, such as seizures, heart attack, low biood sugar, hypotension, drug allergy, food allergy, panic disorder, abnormal heart rhythm, post traumatic stress disorder, and so on. People may also suffer from a simple fainting spell due to anxiety, fear, pain, intense emotional stress, hunger, or use of drugs. Most people who suffer from simple fainting have no underlying heart or neurological problem.
